Little Designers Make Poster for the Opening!
08.02.2018.
Colourful and nostalgic, the poster designed by the Šesnić&Turković design studio for the iconic children’s cinematic adventure Goonies opened the last year’s festival edition, and the same design studio decided this year to pass on the task to little future designers, whom they helped during a two-day workshop, Designing a Film Poster, to make their very first real film poster!
Mentored by designer Andrea Sužnjević, the workshop participants age 7-14 designed and made a poster for the opening film of the third edition of KinoKino Festival, the Swedish sci-fi comedy Up in the Sky.
The workshop mentor, designer Andrea Sužnjević, described what the entire process looked like: “The aim of the workshop was to make a poster design experience possible for children in a condensed form. Although time was scarce, nevertheless we had 12 diligent pairs of hands on our side, which is why this effort not for a single second seemed impossible! After a brief introduction about what a poster is, what is its primary goal and which information this piece of paper should convey (analysing posters they were familiar with), the children watched a feature film. Often not even us, a bit older designers, have a chance to see the entire film before designing a poster, and we are forced to catch glimpses of the atmosphere mainly from scripts or rough cuts, so this task made us extremely happy. Even though we knew that our workshop participants are motivated, and we heard they were very talented and had no doubts about the final outcome, still we couldn’t predict the attention they paid to each shot. The young participants made sketches of the opening credits and telop typography, made notes about the repetition of colours in almost every shot, wrote down motifs. Later they visualised their notes within letters and that way every child got the equal workload and identical visibility on the poster. After many sketches and versions, we opted for the final drawing which we then digitised, and the poster started to take the shape of a micro-exhibition of our talented participants, whose works perfectly work as a whole.”
